Lisa Pitawanakwat

Lisa Pitawanakwat is a proud Anishinaabe artist from the Mooz (Moose) Clan, originally from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, and now based in Sudbury. A second-degree Midewin and entirely self-taught, Lisa channels her deep cultural roots, spiritual path, and personal journey into powerful acrylic works on canvas.

But her creativity doesn't stop there. She is a masterful traditional artisan - crafting hand-sewn hide mitts, moccasins, intricate beadwork, powwow regalia. She's also at the forefont of cultural revitalization, breathing new life into the rare practice of fish skin tanning and expanding her knowledge in deer and moose hide tanning to deepen her connection to the land and her heritage.

Lisa's painting journey began in 2009, sparked by the encouragement and generosity of friend and mentor Christi Belcourt, who gave her the tools and space to begin. Since then, her work has reached international audiences - one of her paintings is permanently displayed at the Benetton Gallery in Turin, Italy, and a commissioned jingle dress regalia piece is featured at the McCord Museum in Montreal, Quebec.
