Against a burning sky, the land takes human form, resting beneath a horizon of black spruce. In the Mishmountain stBear, bird, fish and spirit beings gather across a single continuous field, each form contained within the next and joined by the flowing lines that carry breath and knowledge between all living things. At the right, a standing figure watches over the whole, while dark cloud forms press in from above and below against an ivory ground. Worked in deep earth reds, greens and turquoise that mark Migwans' hand, the painting is a statement of the Anishinaabe teaching that everything living is related, and that what we hold in common is all we have.

Signed lower right, P. Migwans '80. The largest known framed painting on board by the artist, shown publicly for the first time since its creation in 1980.
